Technology Enhances Gameday: What Makes the Best Monitors?
As football season closes and summer approaches, stadiums are gearing up for construction and improvements, unveiling their newest and most high-tech features. One of the most popular additions to stadiums in recent years has been the giant scoreboard monitor, as is seen in the most recent news release from Boise State University this last weekend. These monitors can be used to show live game footage, replays, statistics, and more. But what makes one scoreboard monitor better than another? What size is best for viewers in the stadiums? Why is the latest technology superior and worth the cost? In this blog post, we will take a look at these questions regarding football stadium scoreboard monitors and what we think of Boise’s recent announcement regarding a donation by Melaleuca, a Wellness Company.
Fans and athletes alike depend on the quality of the screens to create an environment where the action is seemingly in the laps of the spectators. A high-quality video scoreboard brings the crowd together in a palpable way. It’s a necessary expense to ramp up the viewer experience and feed the momentum of the players in college football. In our opinion, the best scoreboards will exceed 5,000 square feet, have high-pixel quality, multiple display options, and LED technology.
Does Size Play a Role?
The first thing to consider when looking at scoreboard monitors is the size and scope of the monitor. How large should it be in order to be seen by everyone in the stadium? Well, that depends on the size of the stadium. Boise State’s Albertsons Stadium has a total capacity of 36,387. Whereas, the Sun Devil Stadium further south has a capacity of 53,599. And yet, Boise State’s newer monitor will top ASU’s by about 600 square feet, giving Boise State an edge in bravado.
Is LED the Only Way to Go?
But size isn’t everything. One thing that often differentiates one scoreboard monitor from another is the technology used to power it. LED screens, in addition to size, can offer superior image quality and contrast ratios when compared to traditional LCD or plasma screens. They also use much less power, meaning they can be run for longer periods of time on a single charge and are easier to maintain.
Additionally, LED screens can often be divided into multiple panels that can show different images or video feeds simultaneously, allowing for greater flexibility in what is shown on the scoreboard. This was recently put to use by the University of Nebraska in their new Memorial Stadium, which has a massive 120 foot wide by 33 foot high LED screen. The screen is divided into three panels, each capable of showing a different image or video feed at the same time (a live game feed, a replay, and real-time statistics).
When it comes to football stadium scoreboard monitors, LED screens are the way to go. They offer superior image quality, consume less power, and can be divided into multiple panels to show different images or video feeds simultaneously.
Picky about Pixels
But not every LED screen is worth its salt. It’s just as important to have a crystal-clear display. That’s why the pixel ratio can make or break a game day experience. Ideally, a scoreboard monitor should have a pixel ratio of at least 1280×720. Anything less and the image will start to look blurry, particularly from a distance.
Boise State’s Got Bravado
All of these factors considered, Boise State’s recent announcement of their new football stadium scoreboard monitor is a welcomed one. The monitor will be 120 feet wide by 50 feet high in high definition, using LED technology. We say this $4.5 million donation by Melaleuca the Wellness Company is a timely one.
